The Grandest of Grand Open Days

26 February 2015

The day started with yours truly, aided and abetted by Lola and Tristan, putting in an appearance on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Jane Smith Breakfast Show. Then as the day wore on the sun shone, the birds sang and Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and Supporters old and new along with residents of the five villages we serve; Duxford, Hinxton, Ickleton, Thriplow and Whittlesford, flocked in their hundreds to join us on our Grand Open Day.

To say the event was a success is the understatement of the year!!

The atmosphere was definitely convivial with glasses being raised at regular intervals to toast our magnificent new building and copious quantities of tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, cakes, buns, biscuits and sweets being consumed throughout the day. Our thanks go to all those who provided such a mouth watering selection and the hardy souls who manned the bar and cake stall all afternoon.

Similarly our thanks go out to those Scouts who manned the souvenir stall and who’s sales patter ensured that sales were brisk all afternoon!

A good Job, well done!

As the day wore on visitors, young and old alike, tried their hand on the traversing wall

The building was officially opened with a flag raising ceremony conducted by our two youngest Beavers aided and abetted by Ian ‘Doc’ Hinton our oldest and most respected Leader, recipient of the prestigious Silver Wolf award in the 2015 St George’s Day ‘Roll of Honour’.

Councillor David Bard, Leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council, added a certain gravitas by handing out the prizes to the winners and runners up of the design a badge competition

Then in the evening, after completing the clearing and tidying up, the Leaders, Executive Committee members, supporters and their families enjoyed a fish, chips and champagne (I kid you not!) supper.
